Change keyboard layout Not happy with your computer’s keyboard layout? KeyTweak is a free software program that allows you to map keyboard keys. If you change your mind and want to switch back, it’s easy to restore all mappings with one click. You can also disable some keys, enable others and save the definition again with some KeyTweak features? For power users, there’s nothing quite like having keyboard keys that suit your needs exactly. KeyTweak lets you change the keyboard’s behavior when its keys are pressed. The program is available on Windows Vista computers. Also compatible with Windows XP, Windows 2000 and Windows 7. KeyTweak is no longer developed or supported, but works on Windows 10 computers. KeyTweak is not available for Mac computers. KeyTweak alternatives include Sharpkeys, Autohotkey, Google Input Tools for PC and Portable On-Screen Keyboard. How to install KeyTweak? Downloading Softonic’s KeyTweak is easy and safe. Just run the exe installer and follow the on-screen instructions, including accepting the license agreement. Then go to the Start menu and find the KeyTweak submenu. You can also find a guide and uninstaller here. Just click the KeyTweak button in the KeyTweak menu to launch the application. Using KeyTweak When you open KeyTweak, the main window displays a keyboard image with a menu bar, a remapping section, a keyboard control section, a special buttons section, a Pending Changes section, and buttons for the full and half teaching modes. You can also access the KeyTweak guide from the Help menu. Remember that the mapped keyboard is not specific to your keyboard, it is universal. In the menu bar at the top of the window, the Remapping section lists keys and buttons currently remapped to restore default settings and display the raw map. The keyboard control is where you can choose a new remap for the selected key. You can do this using the drop-down list and the Remap button. Special buttons on the right side of the window let you remap some (but not all) of the special keyboard buttons, such as movie playback controls. The Pending Changes field in the lower-right corner displays all changes that will take effect the next time you restart your computer. The full/half teaching mode buttons at the bottom of the window give you the option to toggle between the two respective teaching modes. At first glance, using KeyTweak may seem complicated, but the complete guide provides step-by-step instructions. Just select the key you want to remap on the virtual keyboard. Match a key on your keyboard and it will have its own number. After clicking on a virtual key, you can see its current mapping in Keyboard Control. Then go to the Select New dropdown listremap and select a new mapping for this key. Then you click on the remap key and that remap will appear in the Pending Changes section. Any changes made with KeyTweak require a reboot. Then click Apply to apply the change and the program will give you the option to restart your computer immediately. You can also stop the conversion by clicking the Clear All button. You can repeat this process for any number of keys, assign new mappings, or disable a key’s function. After restarting, your keyboard will be mapped as you specified when using the program. KeyTweak is primarily for resetting individual keys and fixing minor keyboard annoyances rather than changing the behavior of the entire keyboard. Remember that changes made in KeyTweak are global, so they affect all users of the device. Full teaching mode is an alternative method to remap selected keys. A new window will open when you click on the Full Teach Mode button. After clicking Start Teach Mode, you can select one key for one slot (#1) and another key for the other slot (#2) on your real manual keyboard, then map the number 1 around 2. Half Teach mode it wasn’t helpful because it’s basically the same method, which is the standard way to redistribute keys. Are there limitations to KeyTweak? While it is an effective program for changing the way your keyboard works, KeyTweak has some limitations. KeyTweak cannot combine keys, so for example you cannot assign Ctrl-Alt-Delete to a single keystroke. It cannot even affect the function keys or the pause/pause key on laptops. Some users may also find it annoying that all the special keys on their keyboards are not a free keymapping program. There are many reasons why you might want to change your keyboard’s behavior. You might accidentally hit the wrong key on your new laptop all the time. Or maybe you need to reset your keyboard to run a program or play a specific game.
