Hey Hey, wellness champion! Welcome to Save The Children, where we talk about all things health, wellness, and God-given purpose. I’m so glad you’re here because we’re diving into some serious kitchen detox today!

Before we get into it, let me share a quick story.

The Nairobi Stock Cube Saga

I was in Nairobi recently, chilling at a friend’s house. I asked for something to eat (hunger waits for no one, right?), and as my friend served the food, she sheepishly said, “Oh, sorry, it has a little stock cube in it.”

To my surprise, another friend in the room went, “Why? No, no, no, why?! Why did you still use stock cubes? They’re so useless!”

Now, if you know me, you know I ditched stock cubes ages ago. But hearing someone else passionately declare them “useless” made me smile. Because let’s be real: stock cubes do nothing for your food. They don’t make it sweeter, healthier, or better. In fact, they’re packed with MSG and harmful stuff that’s bad for your health.

So, this brings me to today’s blog: five things you will NOT find in my kitchen (besides stock cubes, because they don’t even deserve the spotlight). And don’t worry, I’ll give you healthier, yummier alternatives. Let’s get started!

1. Spaghetti

Oh, spaghetti! Once upon a time, it had a spot in my kitchen. Not anymore. Why? It’s just empty calories. Honestly, it’s useless and overpriced. Sure, I have a pack or two around, but they’re strictly for my dog.

When it comes to feeding my family, we go for real, wholesome food like rice and beans. If we’re in the mood for pasta, it’s the healthier options like whole wheat or brown pasta—though they’re super pricey.

Alternative: Stick to real food, my friends. Your body deserves better!

2. White Flour

White flour is a sneaky one. It’s everywhere—baked goods, snacks, you name it. But let me tell you: it’s stripped of nutrients, leaving you with empty calories and no benefits.

Alternative: Opt for whole grain or gluten-free flour if you need to bake. Or better yet, explore other creative recipes that don’t rely on flour at all.

2. Packaged Swallows (Powdered Versions)

Ah, swallow. A staple in many homes. But those powdered versions in packs? Nah. They’re far from natural. Why buy something filled with preservatives when you can make fresh versions at home? It’s really not as hard as it seems!

Alternative: Invest in making your own fresh swallows with natural ingredients like yam, plantains, or cassava. Your taste buds and your health will thank you.

4. Bread Spreads (Butter, Margarine, Jam, etc.)

Here’s the thing: bread spreads like margarine and jam are convenient, yes, but they’re also filled with chemicals and preservatives that do nothing for your health.

I know homemade jam sounds intimidating, but trust me, it’s not! Just head over to YouTube and you’ll find tons of easy recipes. It’s worth the effort because the alternative is a jar that’ll last for three years (hint: food isn’t supposed to last that long).

Alternative: Enjoy your bread plain or make your own fresh spreads. It’s easier than you think!

5. Fries, Sausages, and Ketchup

Let’s lump these three together because they’re the ultimate “junk” combo. Sausages are loaded with harmful chemicals (especially the ones labeled “organic” in Nigeria—don’t even bother). Fries from a pack? Preservatives galore. And ketchup? It’s sugar in disguise.

Alternative: Want fries? Grab a potato, peel it, and fry it yourself. Want sauce? Whip up a delicious homemade stew instead of reaching for that red bottle. If you want sausage EAT MEAT!

Why All This Matters

There’s a health crisis going on—a pandemic of junk food. And while drugs have their place, they can’t solve everything. Your food is your medicine. The decisions we make today about what we eat will shape our health for years to come.

I believe that God has given us these bodies as temples, and we owe it to ourselves to care for them. No matter how big your dreams and assignments are, if your body fails, that’s the end.

Take Action Today!

I challenge you to take a good look at your kitchen and start removing the things that don’t serve your health. Let’s raise wellness champions, starting with ourselves and our children.
