Hey,
Have you ever been in any of these positions?
You desire to be FIT but there’s no time for workout or the gym so you do nothing till you have the ‘time’
You plan to overhaul your entire diet to fitfam but you’re unable to keep it up so you go back to white bread and chin chin because you cannot come and kill yourself.
Psychologist call this sort of thinking the “All or Nothing” Phenomena. Since we can’t achieve all our goals – in this case fitness goals – we stop trying and do nothing!
This All or Nothing thinking is lazy at best and dangerous at worst.
Let me explain why.
It’s LAZY because the brain is capable of doing DEEP WORK but it defaults to the lazy and easy path with lots of helps from us. It’s also DANGEROUS because we exclude ourselves from the benefits that would come when we achieve our fitness goals.
Instead our goals are pushed further and further away from us while we wait for that PERFECT UTOPIAN MOMENT when we magically have enough time to go after our goals.
In my recent video HERE, I go deeper into the All or Nothing phenomena, helping you to notice and identify it and of course showing you how to SIDE STEP it with a more sophisticated thinking process.
You’re more sophisticated than ‘this’! (research supports ‘this’)
In the video I share my personal story of “All or Nothing” in relation to my spirituality (thank God for deliverance btw) Watch the video HERE and get the full story.
So you have the beautiful goal of eating a clean diet, exercising or going to the gym but the perfect moment is yet to present itself. What do you? Employ a more sophisticated thinking process and here’s how you can get started
– Get out a piece of paper and write down your goals and the steps you’ll be taking to achieve them. You might not be able to carryout all the steps in the beginning but that’s fine.
– Next ask yourself “what is the barest minimum I can do to achieve these goals? How can I scale it down?” per the steps you’ve written.
For example your goal can be to eat more REAL FOOD for breakfast, lunch and dinner with little to no JUNK! Scaling this down can look like having a healthy breakfast for a start. It may look small but trust me you’ll experience GAINS and WINS from doing this which will motivate you to keep going.
It should never be All or Nothing, zero or hundred, black or white in relation to our healthy living goals.
We can train ourselves to embrace the mental stretch and creative tension it takes our brain to find solutions unique to us.

Remember what the Lord said in the book of Zechariah,
“Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin, to see the plumb line in Zerubbabel’s hand.”
Zechariah 4:10 NLT
Cheers to baby steps now and giant leaps to come.
